What is the difference between a general dentist and an endodontist?
An endodontist is a dental specialist who has completed an additional two to three years of advanced training beyond dental school, focused exclusively on diagnosing and treating conditions that affect the inner structures of the tooth, including the pulp and root canals. While your general dentist provides a wide range of dental services, an endodontist has the specialized skills, equipment, and experience to handle complex root canal therapy, retreatments, microsurgery, cracked teeth, and traumatic dental injuries with a higher level of precision. At ReGen Endodontics, Dr. Alabbas Hussain and Dr. Sarah Hussain are both board-certified by the American Board of Endodontics, reflecting the highest level of proficiency in the specialty.
What happens during a root canal procedure?
During a root canal, your endodontist will first numb the area with local anesthesia to ensure you are completely comfortable. Using our Zeiss operating microscope and 3D CBCT imaging, they will access the inside of the tooth, carefully remove the infected or inflamed pulp tissue, thoroughly clean and disinfect the root canal system, and then seal the tooth with biocompatible materials to prevent reinfection. Most patients experience significant relief from the pain that brought them in, and the procedure itself is far more comfortable than many people anticipate. After treatment, you will return to your general dentist for a permanent restoration such as a crown.
Can a cracked tooth be saved?
In many cases, yes. Cracked tooth treatment depends on the type, location, and severity of the fracture. At ReGen Endodontics, we use advanced diagnostics including CBCT imaging and microscopic endodontics to evaluate the crack with precision. If the crack has reached the pulp but has not extended through the root, a root canal followed by a protective restoration from your general dentist can often save the tooth. Early intervention is critical, as untreated cracks can worsen over time and lead to tooth loss. Our specialists will help you understand the extent of the damage and the best course of action for preserving your natural tooth.
What should I expect at my first appointment?
Your first visit to ReGen Endodontics is focused on accurate diagnosis and clear communication. Upon arrival at our Garner office, our friendly staff will welcome you and assist with any necessary paperwork. You will then meet with Dr. Alabbas Hussain or Dr. Sarah Hussain for a comprehensive evaluation, which includes a review of your dental and medical history, a discussion of your symptoms, and advanced diagnostic imaging such as a high-resolution 3D CBCT scan. Your endodontist will explain their findings, discuss all available treatment options, and answer every question you have so you feel fully confident and informed before any treatment begins.
