Restore Your Smile After Dental Trauma

Traumatic dental injuries are sudden injuries to the teeth, supporting bone, or soft tissues of the mouth, typically caused by falls, accidents, or sports-related impacts. These injuries range in severity from minor chips and cracks to more serious issues like root fractures, dislodged teeth, or avulsed (knocked-out) teeth. In many cases, the inner part of the tooth, the pulp, can be damaged, requiring specialized treatment to preserve the tooth.

At ReGen Endodontics, Drs. Alabbas and Sarah Hussain are experts in treating the internal effects of dental trauma. Using advanced diagnostics, such as CBCT imaging and microscopic endodontics, we quickly identify the extent of damage and provide precise, effective care to help save your tooth and restore long-term oral health.

Types of Traumatic Dental Injuries:

  • Fractured or chipped tooth surface exposing dentin or pulp
  • Avulsed (completely knocked-out) permanent tooth
  • Luxated (dislodged) tooth pushed out of position
  • Root fracture beneath the gumline
  • Cracked tooth extending into the root
  • Injuries to the gums or oral soft tissues
  • Tooth intrusion (pushed into the socket)
  • Alveolar bone fracture supporting the teeth

The Consequence of Delaying Emergency Care

Delaying treatment after a dental injury can lead to serious complications. What might start as a manageable dental issue, like a cracked or dislodged tooth, can quickly progress to infection, root resorption, or permanent tooth loss. The sooner you seek care, the better your chances of saving the tooth and avoiding more complex treatment later. At ReGen Endodontics, our endodontists act quickly to protect your oral health and ensure the best outcome.

Common Treatments for Traumatic Dental Injuries

Replantation of a Knocked-Out Tooth

If your tooth has been knocked out, replantation is often possible if treatment is prompt. We will gently clean the tooth and socket, then carefully reposition the tooth into its original place. A small, flexible splint is then applied to stabilize it while the surrounding bone heals. You must seek replantation within 30 to 60 minutes to maximize the chance of tooth survival.

Stabilization of a Dislodged or Loosened Tooth

When a tooth is partially pushed out of position (luxated), we’ll reposition it and stabilize it using a thin splint attached to adjacent teeth. This allows the periodontal ligaments and bone to reattach properly. You may also need a root canal if the pulp is damaged. Regular follow-up visits are crucial to monitor healing and prevent complications.

Root Canal Therapy for Internal Pulp Damage

If trauma has compromised the dental pulp, the tissue inside your tooth, we’ll perform a root canal to remove the damaged pulp and disinfect the canals. Using advanced imaging and microscopic techniques, we clean and seal the tooth with precision and accuracy. In many cases, the treated tooth is then restored with a crown to protect it from future fracture.

Repair of Chipped or Fractured Teeth

Minor chips can often be smoothed or repaired with a composite filling that matches the color of your tooth. For deeper fractures, we may use stronger materials, such as porcelain, or perform a crown restoration. If the fracture extends to the pulp, a root canal may be necessary before restoration. Our goal is always to restore both strength and aesthetics.

Can a Fractured Tooth Be Saved?

In many cases, yes. Minor chips can be restored with bonding materials. More severe fractures that expose or damage the pulp may require root canal therapy followed by a crown. Even root fractures below the gumline can sometimes be treated with endodontic surgery.

Deep Tooth Restoration

Treatment of Root Fractures Below the Gumline

Fractures in the root are more complex and require careful diagnosis using 3D imaging. Depending on the location and severity, we may stabilize the tooth, perform a root canal, or, in some cases, recommend endodontic surgery. We always aim to preserve your tooth whenever possible and minimize the need for unnecessary extraction.

Management of Soft Tissue Injuries

If you’ve sustained cuts or trauma to the gums, lips, or oral mucosa, we’ll clean and disinfect the area to prevent infection. In some cases, stitches may be needed for healing. We’ll also assess nearby teeth for hidden damage, since soft tissue injuries often occur alongside deeper trauma.

Traumatic Dental Injuries FAQs

What Should I Do if a Tooth Gets Knocked Out?

If a permanent tooth is knocked out, act quickly. Pick it up by the crown (not the root), gently rinse it if dirty, and try to place it back into the socket. If that’s not possible, store it in a cup of milk or saline. Avoid letting it dry out. Then contact ReGen Endodontics promptly. The sooner we replant the tooth, ideally within 30 to 60 minutes, the better the chance of saving it.

Does a Dislodged Tooth Always Need a Root Canal?

Not always. If the tooth’s pulp remains healthy and the tooth is stabilized quickly, a root canal may not be necessary. However, if there’s pulp damage, signs of infection, or delayed healing, we may recommend root canal therapy to preserve the tooth. Our doctors use advanced imaging to guide the most appropriate treatment plan for your case.
